Sunday, 4 May 2025 | 9:30am – 12:00pm | $90

Sunday, 4 May 2025 | 1:00pm – 4:00pm | $90

Join respected printmaker Gabrielle Belz for unique workshop that delves into the art of creating a print series inspired by the concept of whakapapa. This workshop explores how ideas of continuation, rearrangement, and the addition of various elements can transform a series of prints into a cohesive yet unique collection.

In this hands-on session, Gabrielle will guide you through the process of making monoprints using a relief print as your base matrix. You’ll discover the nuances of layering colours and how to craft your own distinctive colour palette.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have crafted several A4 prints, each reflecting your personal touch and creative exploration, all printed on exquisite Japanese Washi paper with non-toxic, water based inks.

This workshop is suitable for printmakers of all levels who are interested in exploring the creative potential of printing variable editions and learning new techniques in a supportive and inspiring environment.

This experience is not to be missed! Seats are limited – book now!

  • Apron or clothing you don’t mind getting inky.
  • You’re welcome to bring your own pre-cut woodblock or lino block, although pre-cut blocks will also be available for use.
  • All other materials, including Akua Inks and Japanese Washi paper, will be provided.

About the artist:

Gabrielle Belz (NgāPuhi, Te Ātiawa) is painter and printmaker and is one of the founding members of Toi Whakaata Māori Printmaking Collective.

‘Originally I painted, but in the early 80’s began working with simple print processes to use in community art projects. Several decades later I still delight in layering marks, textures and colour, using the contact of one surface to another to create an image. It is my favoured tool to communicate thoughts about the past and future of our world and how we exist in it. To me it has become a symbol of the many layers of connectedness we have to each other and the world around us.’
